Does Baking Soda Effectively Clean Teeth?
Many types of toothpaste add baking soda to their formula in order to provide for added whitening, but some people choose to brush with baking soda directly. While baking soda has long been suggested as a toothpaste alternative, there are pros and cons associated with using this substance on your teeth that you need to consider.

Benefits of Brushing your Teeth with Baking Soda
Brushing with baking soda will provide a few great benefits:

It is affordable. A box of baking soda can cost less than a dollar and will last a long time.
It breaks up stains. Baking soda has been shown to break up some stubborn stains, leaving the teeth whiter.
It cleans the teeth. Products containing baking soda have been shown to be more effective at cleaning the teeth than products without it.

Disadvantages of Brushing your Teeth with Baking Soda
Like all things, there are also some disadvantages associated with brushing using baking soda:

It has not been approved by the ADA. So far, the American Dental Association has not okayed brushing with baking soda alone.
No fluoride. Choosing baking soda instead of toothpaste will cause you to miss out on much-needed fluoride.
It is messy. Brushing with baking soda is messy, as there is no handy packaging available comparable to a tube of toothpaste.

If you do choose to brush with baking soda, be sure to do so only periodically, as baking soda should not be your daily brushing agent. If you have additional questions about how to better clean or whiten your teeth, feel free to contact our office for suggestions.

Do You Have an Abscessed Tooth?
An abscess is an extremely uncomfortable infection at the tooth root, or it may also be found between the tooth and the gums. It is often a result of tooth decay, but it may result due to trauma, gum disease, or a chipped or broken tooth. Signs of an abscess include:

• Pain with chewing
• Sensitivity to cold or hot
• A bitter or foul taste in the mouth
• Swollen glands in the neck
• High fever
• Feeling ill or generally uncomfortable
• Swelling and redness of the gums
• Swollen lower or upper jaw
• Open, draining sores in the gums

Getting Enough Calcium When You Suffer from Lactose Intolerance
It can be difficult to get enough calcium when dairy cannot be a part of your daily diet. For those who suffer from lactose intolerance, this can be a regular issue. Calcium improves overall health, including oral health. If you need to add more calcium to your diet but cannot have dairy in your diet, consider these foods:

• Fish like sardines and canned salmon are good sources of calcium.
• Beans and other legumes, like black-eyed peas, are also abundant sources of calcium.
• Leafy green veggies are also a great option, such as bok choy, turnip greens, and kale.
• Seaweed gives your body a ton of nutrients, including large quantities of calcium.
• Oranges and orange juice provide a lot of Vitamin C and a good amount of calcium.

By adding some of these foods into your diet, you will have several sources of the calcium your body needs.
