Does Water Help Heal Gum Disease?
Water is really good for you. There is a reason that everyone is supposed to drink eight glasses of water per day as a general baseline. However, not many people realize the benefits of water when it comes to your oral health. If you want to help keep your mouth healthy or return it to a state of health, water needs to be what you drink the most of.

How Water Helps Your Mouth

Tap water from nearly every municipality in the US is fluoridated. This means that when the water is being treated, fluoride is added for better oral health. When you drink tap water, you are helping to prevent decay. When you suffer from gum disease, water has extra benefits. It helps to rinse your mouth from any leftover debris that could perpetuate the inflammation, and it can help to clean out the pockets between your gums and your teeth. Along with proper periodontal treatment, water can help speed up the process of healing after gum disease is treated.

Do what you can to add water into your diet on a more regular basis, especially if you receive professional periodontal treatment. You should be drinking more than the normal amount per day when you are undergoing gum disease treatment so that your body has extra help flushing out the bacteria that is stuck in your mouth. The more bacteria you can get rid of by drinking water, the quicker your mouth is going to be able to restore itself to the healthy mouth that you want and need it to be.

Calisthenics For Your Gums
According to the American Academy of Periodontology, "up to 30% of the population may be genetically susceptible to gum disease." But taking action can help decrease your odds of losing teeth to gum disease.

Stimulating the gums increases blood circulation to the mouth. This can decrease your chances of developing periodontal issues and help with healing if you already suffer from the condition. Use a therapeutic toothpick that is designed to stimulate the gums or use your toothbrush or a finger to gently massage the general area.

Can Eating Dark Chocolate Help Improve Your Dental Health?
Fluoride is an amazing substance for your teeth as it helps to fight tooth decay. However, recent studies have shown that there is another compound that out-performed fluoride, and that is CBH. It is a white crystalline powder- whose chemical makeup is similar to caffeine- that helps harden tooth enamel, making users less susceptible to tooth decay. This compound can be found in dark chocolate, and it could be the next superfood for your teeth.

Before you go to eat dark chocolate to help your teeth, there are a few important things to consider. Not all dark chocolate is created equal. Just because it says "dark" it could still have a high sugar content, which is not good for your health or your teeth. Here is what you should look for:

Dark Chocolate that is 70% or greater, anything less is not considered therapeutic.
For the MOST therapeutic benefits it’s best to chew on cacao nibs. Most will find this option unpalatable.
Look for raw chocolate as it less processed and more of the antioxidants are left intact.

Studies have already shown the benefits of dark chocolate on blood pressure and mood. Since chocolate has over 300 chemical compounds in it we may continue to see more and more health benefits coming to light. In just a few years, you may be able to head down the dental care aisle and pick a toothpaste that has tooth-protecting components from chocolate. I always knew chocolate was good for us, just glad that smart people are finally figuring that out :)
