It's Greek to Me - A Handy Guide to Common Web Acronyms
There are a lot of acronyms used in the world of web marketing and they can be hard to keep track off. So with this in mind, I have put together a handy list of some of the most common ones that you might come across, along with a brief description of each.

SEM - Stands for Search Engine Marketing, which is an all encompassing term that includes SEO and other Internet marketing activities including: online advertising (such as Pay Per Click), Link Building programs, Directory Building, video marketing and more.

SEO - is short for Search Engine Optimization and refers to the process by which a website is modified and promoted in such a way as to appear at the top of the rankings in a search on Google and other main search engines (Bing, Yahoo!).

SMM - is short for Social Media Marketing and commonly includes activities such as ongoing Blogging programs, and a business presence in social media websites including: Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube, Twitter, etc.

ORM - This one is short for Online Relationship Management and refers to the time and organized efforts needed to monitor and respond to the myriad of public postings that may refer to your business online.

PPC - This stands for Pay-Per-Click and refers to paid advertisement marketing, where the cost of your ad campaign is determined by the amount of clicks the ad receives.

ASP, PHP, .NET and HTML - These are all programming languages that developers use to build websites with. Each has its benefits and limitations and programmers usually determine which one they will use by matching it with the goals and objectives for each particular website project.

The collective wisdom of web service professionals is that you should update your home page content regularly. Once a month is often recommended.

Remember that you want people to visit your site regularly. So, think about ways to provide new and useful information, rewards for checking your website, answers to common questions, seasonal reminders. What about a "Thought of the Month" or a fun facts feature?

Cracking the Code
Have you seen a lot of these odd looking bar codes around lately? Perhaps in in a TV or print advertisement, on product packaging, or simply someone's business card?

So, what are they?

The image to the left is what is commonly known as a QR code, which basically functions as a more sophisticated and modern day barcode. Recently, it was estimated that over 14 million users scanned a QR code in June of 2011 alone, with over 58% of those coming from their own homes.

So, why are so many folks using this feature?

•Larger storage capacity - Each QR code can store a great deal more data than a standard barcode.

•User friendly: The codes are easy to create and work on most operating systems including: Android, Apple and Windows.

•Affordable: There are a number of resources available for free to assist in creating customized QR codes.

So, how do they work? To access the info within the code, all you have to do is scan the code with your smart phone or other scanning device.

What if I don't have products that I need to barcode? How can these help me and my business?

•Lead Tracking - Unique QR codes can be used to keep track of prospects acquired from marketing campaigns and provide direct links to unique pages within your website.

•Easy to Reach - You can make it easy for people to reach you by providing a QR code that contains all your contact information. For example, the QR code above is my contact information. Please feel free to try it out and let me know what you think.

•Surveys - these codes are great for tracking surveys and making it easy for your clients to quickly respond.
