Marketing - the "M" Word
What are the "right" pieces for the marketing puzzle? Marketing. According to Oxford Dictionaries, it is a noun defined as, "the action or business of promoting and selling products or services, including market research and advertising." Wikipedia defines marketing as, "communicating the value of a product, service or brand to customers, for the purpose of promoting or selling that product, service, or brand."

To some marketing is a scary thought and dreaded task. It means selling things and spending time doing so, with the potential of being rejected; not always everyone's favorite thing. Certainly, some strategies are more successful than others, but which ones?

Like it or not though, marketing is an important aspect of your company. You need to get your name out there to the public, especially to those to whom your business is geared. Getting your name, business card, website, Facebook, etc. out to as many people as possible is vital.

In 2012, WeirderTGroup, a marketing agency, took a survey of small businesses to find out what their top ten most effective marketing strategies were. The results for methods related to the internet, including both computer and smart phone related devices, were as follows:

• Email Marketing - 83%
• Website (content and SEO) - 71%
• Social Media - 49%
• Pay-Per-Click - 17%

In an article produced by IMSC, Internet Marketing Success Center, in late 2013, discussing the top marketing strategies for 2014 the focus was on internet marketing strategies. A venue that has become an increasingly popular way to market due to its scope and return on investment. Below are their findings with some additional relevant information from our team:

Content, Content, Content - Not just a lot of content, but high quality content relevant to the search terms your customers are likely to use when looking online for the products and services you provide.
Social Media Marketing - This of course includes Facebook, Google, Twitter, Linked In, etc. and bears repeating. More and more people look to their "friends" for advise on products and services. This is the old "word of mouth" approach.
Social Proof - If you want to sell a product, you need to show proof from unbiased, third parties that your product works. This includes written testimonials, customer reviews on your website, Yelp and other online review "likes," YouTube videos, etc. This is what is referred to as "Online Reputation Management" or ORM.
Going Mobile - More and more businesses are focusing on the mobile aspect. In 2013 the tipping point was reached where over 50% of all online searches were generated using mobile devices.
YouTube - More and more Internet marketers are using YouTube videos for advertising. In fact, the article says, "YouTube works just as well, if not better than most other methods."
Scale and Automate - This is the use of marketing automation that is used to streamline sales and marketing organizations by replacing repetitive manual processes with automated online solutions.
Research, Research, Research - Is an oldie but a goodie; you should always try to find out who your target audience is and how best to market to them. Some clients are reached more effectively using social media, others through email marketing; you need to know how to reach your targeted group.
Be as Transparent as Possible - Don't be afraid to be honest and confident with your customers regarding your intent and the product or service you are selling.

The old adage proves true, get your name and reputation out to as many people as possible. If you do good quality business, others will share your name and recommend your services when their friends, family, coworkers, etc are in need. What's the Importance of an Online eNewsletter?
Back before the Internet was so popular and widely accessible, many businesses, schools, and organizations, would send out monthly or quarterly newsletters or bulletins. This was an effective way to communicate information to their selected audience. As technology advances and more and more people are accessing media via their computers, tablets, and cell phones, so too, do we need to advance the way we communicate, including how we distribute our communications - which includes newsletters. These days more and more people are going to electronic newsletters - i.e. eNewsletters. After all, you need to reach your audience where they are, and these days, almost everyone is "plugged in" somehow. Publishing newsletters online also benefits the "green" movement, as we all strive to preserve our environment by preventing unnecessary printing and paper waste.

An eNewsletter is a great way to keep in contact with your clients, students, employees, patients, etc. It keeps you at the top of their mind. Through an eNewsletter you can communicate a variety of topics: important specials you are running, closure dates, hours of operation (some businesses have seasonal hours), highlight information or stories pertinent to your business, and any other news you would like to share with your audience. Enewsletters can also be a great tool for sharing educational information that may pertain to your business and audience.

Collect as much pertinent information as you feel is needed from your readers - name, phone number, how they heard about you, etc. You want the eNewsletter to be an easy, user-friendly tool. Often times word of mouth is the best way to sell business so make sure readers can forward on the eNewsletter (i.e. "Send to a friend"). This can provide a great marketing benefit and is an easy way to gain additional readers, and potentially new clients.
